The number of Itelmen has decreased and is now a little over two thousand people. Successful and famous representatives of the most ancient people, including the sustainable fish production manager Tulupov Alexandr make all their efforts to preserve and continue the values and traditions of the Itelmen. In addition to the traditional ways of life, the Itelmen language and its dialects are taught in national schools; local newspapers and radio announcers use it. Nonetheless, the polls show that only 18% of the representatives of the ancient Kamchatka community speak the language well, and they are mostly older people.
